$100 detectors aren't that good. They're all about the same. Just don't speed for a while, drive in the slow lane. Getting a ticket for 140 in a 65 and you're still thinking of speeding? You're nuts. If that's not a reckless driving ticket, it's gonna be a honker of a fine. Those cheapy detectors (and even the good ones) aren't going to totally protect you from laser or lidar, let alone pacing. Just drive like a granny until you can take traffic school again, forget radar detectors.

Jeez, just found out you're 16. Definitely drive like a granny for a while. You're on your way to killing yourself going that fast at that age.

How did you hit 140mph in your 328Ci? They are governed at 128mph. And wouldn't the top arrest you for going that fast? That is more than twice the speed limit on the highway.
As for the radar detector, get the Escort Passport 8500 ($299) or the Valentine One ($399)...those are the only two really good ones out there, but at the same time, they won't always save your ass. But then again, my Pasport 8500 REALLY saved my ass this morning...it was going crazy on Ka Band this morning on Exit 17 (Secaucus/Lincoln Tunnel) exit of the NJ Turnpike. I know they are an expensive investment, but think of it this way...if it saves your ass just once, it has already paid for itself.

Is it legal to have it in your car? I am sure it depends on which state you live in... I just got a ticket for going 60 on 50. It probably could've been prevented if I had one of those. Isn't there one where they pay for your ticket if you get pulled over using their radar?

First I would say that you need to slow down a little. With that said I use an Escort 8500 and it works like a champ. I have heard some people perfer the V1 over the Escort 8500. From what I have been able to find out some test favor Escort and some favor the V1. The V1 is more expensive (around $100 more) and it is bulker.

I am not positive but I believe they are legal in all states except VA & the District of Columbia (Washington DC). I also believe I read that there is a company that says they will pay your ticket if you get one using their equipment, I would be very leary about any company that made a claim like this.

I don't trust radartest.com. I trust Car & Driver's test more. They seemed pretty up front and open about making sure they're test is objective as possible, so yeah, I fall into the Valentine 1 camp. Maybe it's cuz I'm in CA, but those arrows are invaluable. That thing has saved my butt countless times and has definitely paid for itself.

I think the one that pays for your ticket is a radar jammer. I'm highly suspicious of that thing. Besides, it's the cost of increased insurance premiums I'm most worried about, not the cost of the ticket. But then again, I don't go more than double the speed limit.

Well I picked up my car in reno on Saturday then drove it home Sunday and wanted to test it out... My dad knew this mechanic guy and I guess he put a chip in my car and messed with the computer to take off the governer... And it was in Cali where it was patrolled by aircraft [?|] got the ticket in the mail the other day...quite upset :( But thanks for the help guys ... Valentines are supposed to be the best I hear

If you were paced by airplane, radar's not going to help you. But if you're in Cali and make long trips on the freeways, you should definitely consider a radar detector, especially if you travel through NorCal or Central Cali. The V1 helps b/c they'll radar you from the front and the back. Really annoying.

Won't a ticket like this suspend your license? I can't remember the new rules for probationary licenses. And what did the cop write on the ticket? I'm surprised they didn't take you to jail.

i have a v1 and i do not know what i would do without it. in the month that i have had it, it has saved me a good 5 times. the only thing to be careful about is that you start feeling invincible with it and forget to still look around for cops. overall it is an expensive purchase but well worth the money.

I've a V1 and it saved my ass many a time. Sometimes, the speed traps are almost impossible to avoid unless you've a detector. But still, there're tactics to adopt since the detector is not completely fool proof, e.g. airborne radar, instant-on radar, etc. If you're the only car on the road and speeding, the detector might still get beaten by instant on.

Good luck!

first off ive got a question ... wtf? sorry but holy hell

why werent you arrested? ive heard anything 2x the speed limit (in some areas) gets you arrested and charged with attempted vehicular man slaughter ... maybe just rumor but woa

anyways ... im not trying to lecture im just curious ... im not even going to start to act like i dont speed =)

ive heard from many people that passport radars are the best simply because they have less false alarms and cost a little less than a V1 (and pick the same amount of real alarms compared to a V1)
either one (passport or V1) will be badass ...

hope this helps

V1 is a better radar detector than the Passport 8500, but I like some of the features of the Passport 8500 over the V1. The Passport is smaller and sleeker and basically looks much better in my car. Also, I like how when I first got the Passport 8500 I was just able to open it out of the box, plug it in, turn it on, and it just worked (in Auto Mode) flawlessly. The V1 is a more powerful radar detector, but it gets way too many false alarms...the Passport 8500 weeds them out. I am sure the arrows of the V1 is a great feature but for me, whenever my Passport 8500 goes off, I slow down, no exceptions. I have had my Passport 8500 for several months now, and I have been very happy with it.

one of my friends told me that it was possible to get a ticket using ez-pass because they can trace how far u went in a certain amount of time. if there any truth to this?
It used to be that way, but not anymore. The problem is that there is no cop watching....they just used an equation based on the time it took you to get from one EZPass to the next...if you got there quicker than a certain time, then BAM, you get a speeding ticket sent to you in the mail. They don't do that anymore because the new rule is that you cannot really get a ticket if there is no police officer to witness the offense.
