. Last two Mann oil filters I've purchased started leaking around the filter's O ring. I don't over-tighten them either.

Really??!? DO you know why they started leaking?

Has anyone else had this problem with these filters?

I think it could be a little imperfection in my oil filter housing. The o-ring seal on the mann oil filters is smaller than those on the STP. I've taken the oil filter housing off my car and checked it over pretty throughly with a digital calipier to make sure nothing was messed up -- and didn't see anything. Oh well. 176,000 miles and being redlined every day... it still runs absolutely great. I'm not too worried. If there are any larger pieces of dirt/grime/metal, they probably would have been gone a long time ago.

I have been using Castrol Synthetic. However, I recently started haering a sharp sound that is with the RPM of the engine, it could be a pully, or a cylinder. It faded after I changed the oil the last time, but it came back. I think I will try a new brand of oil and filter and see if that helps.

The sharp noise only starts at 4k rpm and wont happen below 4k at all (it goes away after the engine is below 4k), and will stay with the engine rpm (above 4k) depending on your acceleration, sometimes if my foot doesnt move from the point of accelerating, it wont ring at all. It is weird. I'll ask my mechanic on friday, i am having him reset the oil and airbag light, and recharge the AC.

Also, what are your opinions on the oils that say to use with engine over 75k miles? Is it really necessary? I have been putting Synthetic 10w40, and my engine has 110k now on it...what are your opinions/recommendations?

If I broke the car in with synthetics, which I do, then I continue to use them. I had 246k on my 84 733i when I got rid of it, all with Mobil One 10-40 and I never had any issues with that car. I ran my 91 318is from birth to sale (164k) all on Mobil One. I have never had a leak or issue with Mahle or Mann filters and that is all I use, unless you count the Fram on my Chevrolet pickup.

That's vanos and/or hydraulic lifters. I wouldn't worry.

i have yet to change the oil in mine but generally when i do an oil change i always use castrol 20w50 ( non synthetic ) and only fram oil filters or oem filters if a fram isnt avaliable and never had a problem.

I've heard alot of people say FRAM is the absolute worst. I've heard others swear by it. I haven't done any real testing, but I used them on my Dad's old Camry, and I took a sample of the oil after using a fram and after using a K & N. Kept everything else the same (same oil brand, same #[3001] of miles, same RELATIVE route everyday, etc.) And the oil that came from the K & N after 3001miles was notably cleaner. Take what you want from that. I don't know if any real tests have been done.

Your not supposed to break in cars with Sythetics.

Ummmmmmmmmmm...what? Why should you not use an oil that protects longer, protects better, keeps seals in better condition, etc. instead of old dino oil which just leaves crud everywhere? [confused]

My 134k mile e34 has had synthetic for a VERY long time, and it's an incredibly clean motor.

You don't use sythetics because they don't allow for the piston rings to seal properly when you first break it in. I didn't say anything about switching back to your favorite afterwards. In other words Sythetics protect longer and better because there more slippier and dyno oil is much less slippier so you want non slippy for break in.

Plus most engines are broken in at the plant but I just wanted to say no Synthetic for first 1k-2k miles.

That was the "old days" and a common "wives tale". Both my 91 318is and my 98 M roadster came from BMW with synthetic oil in them. Both had tags on the oil filler cap stating so.

Dude I think thats total BS. Why would your piston rings not "seal properly"? First off I thought the break in was to SEAT the rings. The problem to begin with is being too 'sealed.' It isn't slippier, at all. It's just designed to last longer, and do a better job when stressed.

I think my E34 had synthetic from the start too. Runs absolutely flawless, and sure as hell burns a LOT less oil than my E30 did. I hardly believe the valvetrain would be so sparkling clean if it had dino oil, even if they were very strict about oil changes.

I have been using Royal Purple 20w-50 and mann filters for the past few years on my E36, 132,000 and going strong. Also the "Vanos click" has gone away sence I changed from Mobile 1 to Royal Purple. I made the switch at 100,000.
