Here's a question for you guys and gals...

What brand of oil filter do you use?

I've heard nothing but good things about K & N, and Walmart brand filters. I wonder how BMW oil filters compare. Any thoughts???

None of the above; Mahle or Mann, true German filters.

So "other" then? lol. [hihi] j/k. Your response is really helpful, b/c I really do not know what brands are out there and which is the best.

Oh, and I've heard some horrible stuff about Fram.

Has anyone heard anything bad about Walmart filters?

Thanks for the responses!!

I'll second that - I always use Mann. I also always really trust Bavarian Autosport, and this is what they had to say:

At Bavarian Autosport, we know that quality replacement parts keep BMWs in tip-top condition. That's why we recommend Mann oil filters and filter inserts. We use Mann oil filters on our BMWs--you should, too.

I lived in Germany for 10 years and just got back to the states...while I was there all the BMW dealers recommended Mahle or Mann filters with Mobile 1 synthetic motor oil. I used to run my Bimmer 100+ MPH on the Autobahn and it performed like a dream. Never had problems.

Thanks for the responses guys!

So, I'm beginning to think 'Mann' is best brand for oil filters? Does anyone know where I could find an article or information about their oil filters? Before I posted this, I never even heard of them.

Oh, and Walmart supertech does have oil filters for this car.

I had always been told that nothing was better than a K &N, but I think my mind is slowly changing. Thanks!

Anymore comments are for or against Mann or any other filter would be highly apprecciated.

What's the difference, if one exists, between Mahle and Mann?

WHere would I find a Mahle or Mann oil filter?

Also, what brand does BMW use, or do they manufacture their own?

THanks. Sean

I have used fram filters on all of my cars/pickups that I have had without any problems including my wifes rendevous (fram x2 filter). It wasn't until I started looking on this site that I have ever heard anybody say to stay away from them.

For my bimmer though, I will probably stick with OEM.

I have heard of oil filters failing in cars. One fram one did in my old buick. The sure grip does not have metal backing it has cardboard. The design is crappy...

A question

So, when I get my car back from the body shop, I plan on getting an oil change for it. This is going to sound like a stupid question, but how do I know what type of oil to use? It's a 95 318Is, and I don't know if synthetic oil is in the engine currently. What brand oil should I use? Should I do it myself? or pay a shop $50 for it?

I've changed oil on Toyotas, Hondas, Dodges, chevys, Acuras, and Ford; but enver a BMW. Is it better to pay someone, or are they all the same?

Thanks.

Here is a link to changing the oil on an e36, they are all about the same. I prefer Mobil One.

Oil Change

THANKS SO MUCH!!

I had no idea it was that easy. That's like the best place for an oil filter.
I'm definitely going to do it myself, and I' mgoing to order a Mahle or Mann off that site you gave.

How do you reset the Oil Change indicator on the car?

Thanks.

I use STP filters, which are pretty good. Last two Mann oil filters I've purchased started leaking around the filter's O ring. I don't over-tighten them either.
