How's errybody doin? I just got a 328is and was just wondering what people opinions are on Turbo's vs. Superchargers. I think I'm gonna go with the turbo just for the simple fact of the possible bolt on horsepower....but enlighten me please.....what do you all think..... I just don't know enough about these beautuful machines yet... Let me know!

well well. this kind of question arrising from the intention was asked more than often. unfortunately we never really saw a model that got a blower a turbo.

turbo is higher PSI but tends to have the turbo lack.

supercharger is a little lower but constant power.

personally i like a supercharger better. there really is no particular reason. do you already have a manufacturer in mind? pricing etc. checked? if not you should do that before investing that much energy just to find out that the budget might possibly be a little tight.

I just got a little loot together. Not pressed in any way to make a decision right now. Just looking into it. All in store right now is a buddy of mine giving me a deal on a shark injector and an AC Schnitzer exhaust. I was thinking that a supercharger was more what I was leaning to.... But I'll take time to think about this one. Thanx!!!

The turbo is not bolt on horsepower. The supercharger is "bolt on horsepower".

With a turbo you need to re-route the exhuast, intake, and then install some type of intercooler, but with a supercharger, i believe all you have to do is re-route the intake (very easy in this case) and install a larger belt.

if i ever would do a supercharger add-on at a car, i would have to put a asticker on it that reads "blown" or "blown away" actually the plate frame could read that. barely someone would understand the meaning, but those who do will laugh!!!

actually there is no need for an intercooler, but its better if you do. re-routing the exhaust is not a big deal if the flange for the downpipe is near the OE exhaust manifold flange, but if you get a kit, they should supply the piping needed which makes the re-routing extremely simple.

bolt on power isn't so bolt on when you deal with that much hp.

super chargers are a constant wear on your motor to drive the turbine wheel, turbo's are not

my vote: turbo.

here's a couple sites to get you started on your quest. the turbo kit is a bit pricey for the HP improvement, IMO. i have seen them on Ebay for considerably less but i also just read a post on another board about the winning bidder not recieving any install instructions and can't get a reply from the seller. the S/C kit i installed earlier this summer was $3500 delivered. different applications may be more or less? if i am correct the HP is 210/215ish with an additional mod i did. (Shawn Fogg's check valve boost upgrade) all it involves is a check valve spliced in a hose, available at any parts store. Shawn says it's good for an extra lb of boost. so, who wants 75 more horsepower?

BTW, the downing/atlanta s/c does not produce boost at idle. it is in vacuum. the system has a bypass that kicks in just above idle and bypasses when you aren't into the loud pedal. this helps it's behavior and manners in that when you get off the gas and back on, there would be a big shock(bad) to the engine without the bypass. you don't want the power adder trying to suck the throttle body into the engine when the throttle is closed. a lot of turbos are set up so that this is the case. it is not a big drag race blower that is designed to hold wide open throttle until shut down. you would never know it's there if you didn't how underpowered the car was before. driveability is excellent.
