As far as I know the battery inside the remote key are not replaceable. The battery recharges itself on the steering column when you are driving the car. Why? Does your reomte key not work anymore?

It is still working. I thought the battery is somehow low because it won't lock/unlock from a not-so-far distance. I need to get about 25 feet from the car before the remote starts to work.

[thumb] My remote has a small compartment on the back side where the battery resides. I have changed my battery on two occasions and it looks as if I will have to change it once again. I needed a jewelers screw driver in order to unscrew the tiny screws in the remote battery compartment. I was told originally by the dealership/stealership that I would need to purchase a new remote because my remote had no battery when mine stopped working... Simply turn your remote over and look near the bottom quarter of it, you should see a plastic strip which pops off exposing two small screws, underneath that panel is the battery. It looks like a watch battery. Might I suggest Radio Shack... Good Luck, and Happy motoring...

I just inspect my remote again and did not see any screws or compartment. The remote must be different between the 2000 and 2003 model.

same thing with my remote. i don't have the compartment at the back. i think you're right about the self charging thing. now i don't know what to do at this point.

[thumb] I just replaced my battery on Saturday in my remote. I'm sorry that your remote is different on the 2003 model than on my 2000 model. Maybe yours gets charged everytime you place it into the ignition housing, as I'm told some remotes are programmed to do... Happy Motoring...[driving2]

From what a lot of people has said, it seems that the range on the later E46 remotes (self recharging ones) is only 20 - 25 ft. That's about the range of mine from brand new. We had a thread a while back about extending the range a bit by holding the key under your chin when you use it. After a lot of highly unscientific and wacko experiments, we decided that it works!!

Yup. I've got one of those rechargeable ones. 20 feet is the max range unless I do the chin thing. Actually, 20 feet is more than the max range without the chin technique.

How does the chin thing work again? I tried it but didn't really work. Are you supposed to huff and puff on the remote and then hold it under your chin? I remember someone said it kind of uses your spine as an antenna (possibly from another forum)? [confused]
