I'm sorry, you guys have probably been asked this but i couldnt find any info on it using search. I just baught a 1995 325is. and the remote doesnt work. I have the remote that is built onto the key. The key only has one button on it. and it has a little bulb. I'm thinking it's an infrared bulb. I changed the battery on it to. but i was wondering, how do i program the key. I have been trying yo find out for weeks. Thanks in Advance

The button on the key is to turn the light on to see where you're inserting the key in the dark. E36 doesn't have factory key-mounted remotes for keyless entry. You may not even have a keyless entry unit installed. You can open the glove box and see if the small black box with flexible antenna wire is plugged into a green connector. Also, if you have a red LED mounted into one of the plastic tabs next to cigarette lighter, that might be a good indicator of a keyless entry/alarm unit being present.

Uuuhhhhmmm....the button on the key is simply to turn the light on the key on. When you press the button, the light bulb on the key itself lights up; it is to help you find the key hole; it doesn't have anything to with the car.
Since you have a LED light next to cig. lighter you probably do have an alarm. You need to find out what brand it is before you can get a remote. You got to drop the bottom of the dash and find the alarm ecu. if it says bmw on it, go to your dealer or ebay and buy a remote and the dealer can program it for you.
