Oil Service After Break-in Period

I purchased my Bimmer new in Europe, drove it about 2,000 miles and shipped it back. I then drove to California from South Carolina adding about 12,000 miles and got my first change at the oil interval light at 15,000 miles. I'm still on the road with no problems 134,000 miles later. The Bimmer dudes know how to build cars and service BMW's, might I suggest you listening to those who do this for a living. Just a thought... Yes, I must confess I love to drive... my job requires a ton of travel and anytime I can drive versus fly, I drive. Any trip less than 8 hours is a road trip. The Bimmer is a dream to drive on the open road, I just have to watch my speed. I just paid another speeding ticket yesterday. I've had three in the last 2 years. I'm on the road about 250 days a year and lovin every minute of it. I'm planning a trip out to the West Coast for my 25 years reunion, and yes I'm driving my bimmer to Cali one more time. I'm going for 1 million miles. Happy Motoring

Just my opinion but even though eng and cars and oil, even filters are built better today than 30 years ago, the eng still needs to break in, that mean larger than usual insolubles that the filter should catch but again depending upon the micron size of these particles. I would at the very least change out the filter and top it off, or change the oil and filter as a precaution. Think about it $5,000 eng or a $40 oil and filter change? (Dude) I know whatever you do won't cause any immediate visable harm, but later if you keep it and want to get 300,000 plus miles on this eng, it might make a world of difference. Let us know what you decide.
Fantastic. It was like buying a real expensive souvenir (that wouldn't fit in my luggage). I wanted to make sure the car reaches the break-in point during the trip so I planned my itinerary from Munich->Italian Lake region->Portofino->Venice->Munich.

I can't believe we're even debating an oil change after break in...you just spent at least 35K on the finest piece of automotive engineering available, and you're wrestling with the decision to pay 50 bucks for an oil and filter change by the dealer?
As for oil changes every 15K, I wonder what oil change frequency a dealership recommends after the warranty is up. I'm guessing much less than 15K. Perhaps I enjoying tearing up money, but I'll be changing my oil every 7.5K.
Heat + friction = decrease in viscosity, even with the magic of BMW engineering added into the left side of the equation.

I can tell you that the independent shop I use, these guys have been servicing BMWs for 25 years, looked at me screw eyed when I mentioned to them that BMW is recommending 15K mile oil service. They recommend 6-7.5K oil intervals no matter what BMW recommends. DIY costs about $40 after you buy the 36mm socket and torque wrench if you don't already have those.
