My poor bumper

So today I was shutting the garage door and bang - the door hit my back bumper and continued going down [:(] I obviosuly did not pull in far enough and totally accept fault for this but I want to get it fixed. I immediately brought the car to BMW and made an appt for Monday to get it fixed. They gave me a price of $ 573.35 to fill in 4 screw mark/size chips, sand and repaint the entire bumper. They broke it down like this...

Body labor - 4.5 hours @ 45.00/hr = 202.50
Paint Labor - 4.9 hours @ 45.00/hr = 220.50
Paint supplies - 4.9 hours @ 21.00/hr = 102.90
Parts $15


Does that sound reasonable to you guys? I really don't know what is a good price and what is too much. Any opinions appreciated [:)]

I don't know if it's resonable or not but, since when do you pay for paint supplies by hour (you buy paint one time not every hour)? Or is that rent for the paint place and air brush or whatever they use? If so, I would think Paint labor would cover that, it's not like you have to pay for parking space where a mechanic will fix your car. I guess the "Parts" include the broken fastners if any and the plastic used to fill the holes. What do you think?

I agree - seems kinda weird. I'm not quite sure about the accurateness of this estimate. Is the "body labor" the amount of time it'll take to just take the bumper on and off the car? If that's the case, then there is no way it takes 2.25 hours to take the bumper off or reinstall it. No way! If the body labor includes the time to take off, reinstall, sand, and prep the bumper, then I would think 4.5 hours is reasonable. But, then there is no way it would take 4.9 hours to paint the thing. Something just doesn't add up. Seems like too much time to me. I also don't understand the paint supplies by the hour, but $102.90 for paint supplies probably isn't too bad - maybe a little high, but probably not exorbitant. The $15 is probably for new bumper fasteners.

I can't say if that is a good price or not being that I'm extremely lucky that my boys and I know how to do that stuff and have all the equipment. I'll ask around to see for you. But I would also check on replacing the bumper it may be less expensive. I'll let you know what I find out.

I have the ETK cd and checked for the part number but it turns out it only goes up to 2002. I can get you that if you want, I don't know if the bumpers are different.

Tweet, your estimate is very close to my estimate..........I was rear ended a couple of weeks ago......the bumper has a couple of deeper cuts that have to be sanded or filled and long scratches (about three feet) that have to be sanded too........ plus the whole bumper has to be repainted, no patch paint allowed......I have three estimates that range from $600.00 to $800.00............this of course does not count the car rental and Ziebart reapplication on the bumper...........hope this helps............

The part number for a primed bumper for a 2002 330Ci convert is 51 12 7 893 071 and the painted bumper is 51 12 0 025 184, it says "specify color when ordering". The ETK CD doesn't list prices so I can't check. Hope this helps somehow.

My Harley ever consider replacing it? and asking how much it cost? I mean that cheap plastic POS back there cant be that much...

I have a 2002 330Ci and got an estimate for $470 to remove, sand, prime, and paint the rear bumper.

The price seems about right.

I had the bumper on my e36 replaced a few years ago and it cost me just under $1,000 for the bumper and paint job. I don't know pricing on the e46 bumpers, but I would guess it would be roughly in that area.

Tweet, so sorry to hear about yoru bumper! I hope your Bimmer is okay, it happens to the best of us. We have a 03 Lexus RX300 and one time it was being driven into the garage and all of a sudden the garage door fell down on the RX !!! It knocked off the rear spoiler and indented the roof....$3,500 damage, we haven't fixed it yet. [:D]

Lol...it's an instructional video...I thought after watching it, if only they had a bmw towing point. But recently I revisited the manual. It says do not use the tow hook from heavy snow or mud.

I wish I had a video of when I flushed my radiator and overtightened the bleed screw. A hair line fracture in the screw caused it to fail, spraying radiator fluid everywhere, and I didn't know what was going on except I was screaming at my Dad that my radiator temp was red lining! Live and learn....lol
