Hardcode drivers[fake] ... Is this normal (in an auto tranny)?[confused]

Today after making a turn on the side-street I started to accelerate hitting about 4000RPM at 45-50MPH. After reaching the speed I completely let go of acceleration pedal for the car to drop some speed... but it was very weird how RPM Indicator froze at 4000RPM for 4-5 seconds and then very slowly went down.

This surprised me since usually after gaining speed from a hard acceleration RPM pointer drops very fast after the pedal is released.

Is this bad... a sign of potential future problem or something... or just normal stuff?

Happens from time to time. It's Drive-by-wire at its "best". [fake] The phenomenon is referred to as "Sticky Throttle" and happens to all DBW models. BMW has a recall on that, remapping the software. I was going to talk to my service manager about that next week. [confused]

Actually, it really just seems like the car is holding the car for your convenience. The car probably thinks you are going to mash the throttle again and is keeping you in the powerband, thereby giving you instant power delivery (rather than waiting to downshift again). I think it's pretty normal, but you can take your car to your dealership and have the ECU reset. Sheesh, you automatic llamas. [:p]

i kind of agree with you, and akakubi, both sound good. my first guess was that your software is just hanging in a high gear because it thinks you are going to continue driving in your sporty (but very automatic) way. but hey, go check it out anyways.

that could be the adaptive whatever control. in german it is adaptive getriebe steuerung, how do i know what that is in english. anyway this is how it works: the car "recognizes " the way one drives. hard accelerating or slow, etc. then according to that pattern the electronics change gears later, and also keep a gear for some moments even when the driver stepped from the gaz. that's normal. the car assumes that maybe in the next seconds you will hit the gaz pedal again and therefor does not shift.
in my moms car that sometimes is really annoying. it gives me the feeling that i drive harder than i really want to. it happens all the time. what helps is getting of the gaz slow. don't just flip off but take the foot back a little slower. then it does not happen with me in her car.

My 5 series does some weird shit sometimes too. Once I was coming out of my neighborhood and I shifted into neutral, all of a sudden it sounded like it was raining, I looked on my HUD and the f**king tachometer had jumped to 5,500 RPM in about less than 0.5 seconds. I don't now, maybe my baby was mad at me for something...[:(]

Haha thanks, maybe I just floored it by accident. One of the many things I love about BMWs is that you don't feel the pedal when you're giving it some gas, you feel the car instead.
