Super easy job... Just jack the car up, safety stands, and it's right above the drive shaft... just unclip the little clips, slide it out and replace... couldn't be more straight forward. Might want to grease it up a bit too.

I think he might be talking about the "bitch clip" which is the most annoying clip on the whole car imo, hence its name.

Drop the rear of the transmission down and support on a jack to ease removal and installation. the "fix" is to replace that part, order it in through the dealership.

i got the broken bits out today and I'm going to order a new part from work on tomorrow. anybody know just why it broke like it did?

i would think that it would take a long long time for something like that to snap off

Good thinking, aren't these E30 guys great, we sure love them!
We know how to fix everything because our cars are so old that pretty much every single component has failed on us at one point or another, and we're too cheap to go to a mechanic, so we do it ourselves[headbang] The best part about these cars is that they lend themselves to us in such an open and simple way, that it makes them easy to understand, and the layout makes them easy to work on. Everything just makes sense on these cars. A very well sorted machine.

I'm pretty sure your bitch clip is the same one I thought he was talking about, sin't it? The clip that holds the shifter carriage to the tranny? I had to drop my tanny to get at it too.

yeah I'm doing this on jack stands in my garage so i didn't even try to drop the tranny.

instead i used a dremmel to cut a hole in the floor pan underneath the center console right under the heater controls. made puting in the welded linkage super easy. after i installed it i lined the hole in a few beads of permatex and used some 1/2 inch sheet metal screws to fasten a cover over the hole. reinstalled the center console and nobody knows the difference [hihi]

i did on the one clipped to the tranny
Hmm, I don't remember having problems with that one... although I did have the luxury of doing it on a friend's hoist, so maybe that made it easier. The worst clip in the history of clips is the one that holds the shifter carrier onto the tranny. I almost lost my mind trying to do that one.

I think I probably had a bit of a problem with the clip you're talking about... so I ended up bending the crap out of a long flat-head screwdriver, and was able to unclip it that way.
