my e30 has been treating me well lately although now i am having problems again. yesterday i was driving my car at about 30 mph and the car just cut off on me, i pulled over and tried starting it. the car would start right up, rev up to 2000 rpms and then cut off. it would not idle. after about 20 tries, i punched the throttle hard and it finally stayed on, although it was idling at 1500 rpm. i got the car home and i cut it off and then tried it again and it seemed to be running ok, but then it cut off on me again. It seems like it is doing the same thing it was doing when the alternator went bad (i had a brand new bosch alternator installed 2 weeks ago with a brand new battery) i also installed 8mm racing ignition wires last week, could this have anything to do with it? thanks for the help, Brian.

Could be many things, but if it is only happening at idle, my first guess would be vacuum leak.

Check all of the hoses on and around the intake manifold for loose joints, leaks or cracks, especially the main convoluted pipe as it cracks on the concertina part of the hose.

Next step would be idle control valve and fuel pump .

There you have it, the two E30 experts have conferred and decided it is most likely a vacuum leak. Wait, we have not heard from the Doughnut...but he too will concur. Hehe I love these guys and I would bet they are right!

I installed new ICV and MAF about a month ago. How much do shops charge to check for vacuum leaks? It seems as though the smoke machine method is the best?

Not sure, but could this be a crank angle position sensor problem for the sudden cutting out?
If it was a clogged fuel filter the car would most probably idle but not have any power once put under load (hesitate to take off)
iliad give us a bit more info dude, does the car (once running) accelerate off properly, pull up hills fine?
Your car also doe's not have a "MAF" your car has a air flow meter (AFM) unless you have done the swap?

My guess would be fuel pump, fuel pump relay/associated fuse and crank angle position sensor.

And big daddy, your a freakin' classic!

Its kind of off and on. I did feel a significant loss of power, then it idled high (1500rpm) then it seemed to run fine and then all of a sudden, it cut off on me. I drove the car again this morning and after a few minutes of driving the car cut off on me, i started it up and it cut off again... I gassed it as soon as it started up and i got back home. Yeah, sorry it has a AFM.

stalling too

I have a 325e with just 109,000 miles. Recently it also started acting psychotic. It runs like a kitten then, it may stall at an intersection or parking lot and require a few tries to re-start. Sometimes it stalls while going 35 or 75. At 35 or so, it usually starts back up in a few seconds. At 75 it stalled and re-started in less than a second. Frequently after sitting for an hour or two I go out and it will take 5 minutes and 6 or 7 tries to get it started. I've had it in the shop on and off for 3 weeks and it only duplicated the problem for a short time. My mechanic tested for spark and when it wouldn't start, he said there was no spark. Thant's all we know right now. Any ideas?

Well, there are only so many probabilities to look at when it comes to no spark. Cap and rotor, igintion wires, ground strap, ignition coil, plugs, ECU... what did he say after "there's no spark"? Couldn't he narrow it down for you?

325e

Of course it started right away after he tested for park. It's never done it long enough to do any more tests. Yesterday it wouldn't start after filling up at the gas station. I tried for 10 minutes sitting there and it finally started and ran fine. I'm getting a new fuel filter in tomorrow but I doubt that's it. I'm going to have them check wires, plugs too.

Being the dumb ass I am as far as cars go, I assume if there was no spark the one time it could be tested, that it is NOT a fuel issue? Has to be electrical?
