Here in the dead of winter a dealer has ofered to sell me a 325 cic convertible for $500 over invoice. He includes in invoice, however, a $360 advertising charge. To me the offer is really $860 over dealer invoive. Query should I try and fight the $360 advertising charge or just accept an $860 over invoice price?

I assume it's an '04? Sounds like a good deal, not a great deal. I was in the market for an '04 330i w/ only the sport package or a loaded 325i (didn't want to go above $40k). The dealer had a brand new '03 325i with the sport package, premium package, HK sound system, leather seats, Bi-Xenon lights, in Black Sapphire Metallic. With destination, MSRP came out to be $36k. I told the dealer he's going to have a hell of a time selling an '03, black (they get dirty easily), rear wheel drive vehicle in the middle of winter in Colorado. He agreed with me and after some dealing, I got it for $31.9k ($1500 below invoice) + tax (no dealer handling or advertising charge). BTW, I left and came back a week later after I checked to see what the differences were between the '03 and '04 325i--no differences.
More info: strangely enough, the Bimmer dealers were more willing to deal than the Infiniti dealers (I was also looking at the G35).

Query: Is $1500 below invoive really a realistic possibility for a curreny model year BMW? I've gotten the impression from reading other comments that a $1000 over the invoice was about as well as you could expect to do absent extraordinary circumstances. Are there many deals that span that $2500 range?
It depends on the car and the model year. dpnguyen got a great deal, but he also took a leftover 2003 model. So he saved money, but when it's time to sell the car, he will lose money because he is selling his 03 model and not an 04 model that was available for purchase. Convertibles are also harder to get deals on because they are harder to sell (and thus, resell in the used car market).
MikeH, I think you should try to fight the $360 advertising charge...sounds like a bullshit charge to me. Mercedes, Lexus, and Infiniti don't have a charge like this, so try to fight it. Right on.
I only take the Bimmer out on nice sunny days. I drive the Saab 9-5 when it's not so nice. True, buying a new '03, my car will depreciate faster than the '04 but in 10 years, this will be negligible.
Mike, I think you need to try and get the best deal possible--whatever it is. I gave you an example of the deal I got so you had an idea of what's out there. I'm sure others can tell you what type of deals they're getting on an '04.
