I've been asked to re-post this as it did not make it over to the "new board". So here it is...

Resetting the Service Interval Indicator Lights

Required Tools and Parts:
  • Electrical Wire (5-8 inches in length)
  • Fuse
First, locate the diagnostic socket, at the engine compartment. There are two different types;

Up to 1987, it's located near the intake manifold, and has a red cap:

After 1987, you have to find a big round black plastic socket, with a cap held by a plastic strap, located near the oil dipstick (M20 engines) or near the firewall, driver's side (M42 engines):

1) Pull the cap (early connector), or unscrew it (late connector), and you'll see a number of connectors, depending of the type of plug (see the diagrams below).

2) According to the type of plug on your car, locate the right connectors, marked red in the diagrams.

3) Use the jumper wire to connect them together (you should always use a fused jumper wire).

4) Turn the key to ON position, without starting the car. When the 5 LED's in the dash light up (3-4 seconds), turn off the key. If you keep the ignition on, (another 6-7 seconds), after the LED's appear, you'll perform an inspection reset, too.

5) Disconnect the jumper wire.

MAKE SURE YOU JUMP THE RIGHT CONNECTORS!!! The best way to follow the diagram for the late type connector is to match its center circle cut with the one in your car. The earlier one has a flat side, so it's easier to follow.

If you CAN'T reset the lights, or if they reset and return after a few days, you probably have to replace the SI board batteries (another FYI post). GOOD LUCK!

Lowen,
I have used a setup similar to the one you described since 1988. It works fine. First on my 1985 and then my 1989 with the updated service indicator system. One difference is that I use a longer section of zip cord and a momentary switch inserted into a plastic 35mm film container. I can then insert the wires into terminals 7 and 19 and then sit in the drivers seat and reset the lights. I have a question tho, can this device by utilizing different terminals rotate the engine for adjusting the valves?

Lowen,
I have a numbered diagram in the round but I did not know which connections to use. Incidently I just reset my oil lights because I just changed oil today and just 4 of the 5 lights lit. I can't remember this happening before. Can you enlighten me, I think my memory has gone south today.?
Thanks,
Bob

Bob-

If I was to take a guess I'd jump pin #11 to a postive(+) to try to turn her over to rotate it. Don't know for 100% though as I've never tried it. You could also just jump the cylinoid with a switch aswell... :)

4 of the 5 lights huh? What light did not come one? It simply may be a dead led light aswell...

#11 to positive or to #19 ground>

Your call is as good as mine. I'd have to research it a bit more before I'd be 100% sure as to which one to tell ya...
