My car is a 1991 325i and the fuel gauge is stuck at the 1/2 mark. It does return to the normal spot when the engine is turned off.

The low fuel indicator does come on with about 1 to 2 gallons left.

The fuel gauge and SI board have been replaced (no change in the needle position).

Is it still possible that the sending unit in the tank is bad?

The top half of the metal wiper that follows the track on the sender unit is more than likely unserviceable and needs replacement, (worn out) If you can check it out before you replace it.

My fuel gauge either reads full or half and under (leaving the whole top, excluding the full reading, useless.)

Sounds like something your car would do.[joke]
