I see the E90 has the top of the door come out with the door open, sorry if I'm not too clear, referring to the part above the window. My question is, was the E46 the same way? I had a 325i, but I just can't seem to remember, thanks! I thought it was like the coupe where it was just the lower portion of the door that opened.

Coupes usually have what is called "frameless doors" or "frameless windows". Some Coupes have the frame around the front windows (such as the Honda Accord) and some Sedans have have frameless windows (such as the Subaru WRX), but usually frameless windows are something you find on a Coupe. It's just more pimp daddy to have frameless windows.
