cold air intake

i am considering buying a cold air intake for my 2000 323i. i have read figures like (stock hp + 5-10%) anyone know any figures on hp and torque increases. anyone got any good suggestions on which has more effect: the kind that takes the air filter down behind the front bumper or the kind that has a heat shield and leaves the conical air filter near where it originally was? i have looked at bavarianautosport.com and http://www.benferperformance.com/main.pl?sid=5893016493&page=pitem-bmw&product=BMW-E46-CAI and some others on ebay.com. anyone ever heard of benfer performance?

Yah, I'm going to get a benfer for my '00 323i (Hey, nice car btw ), carbon one at that. It's a real CAI (The filter is down in the bumper, and the carbon helps disperse the heat and doesn't 'soak' it up as much). The short one you described sounds more like a short ram, or some sorta ebay gizmo. (Sorry, the stories I hear about ebay ones scare me - unless it's someone selling the 'real' thing, those 30-40 $ ones can be iffy at best, especially the sizing and quality. You likely will get gains from them, but then again you might get a loss!

Saw the Benfer CAI from the link... Doesn't look bad, though the wording is a bit vague:
"K&N or equivalent high-flow pre-oiled cleanable filter," to me, this says "$8 K&N-style filter that's been used & returned." Of course I'm just bitter - I don't like the idea of spending $300+ on 3-4 rwhp... But I suppose with a modified ECU it might be worth it in the long haul.

It's 100% K&N now. When the intakes were first released, we actually had a shortage of K&N filters FROM K&N!!! We second sourced the same exact filter from the same company that Dinan uses for their filters. It was a cotton cleanable filter, basically the same thing as a K&N.

Now we have a full K&N inventory that goes out with every intake.
