Battery registration

Trying to help my father in law with his 2011 328i (E90). Just had the battery replaced for him today at Les Schwab. I’ve seen in some videos that the new battery will need to be “registered” with the car’s computer. They said they were unable to register the battery with their fancy Snap On code reader. Said there was no option there when they tried. What’s the deal? Is this car just too old and perhaps doesn’t require battery registration?
